Tips to Play Blackjack

Blackjack, you have definitely heard of it at some point in life. It is one of the most widely played games in casinos around the world, so you should definitely learn how to play Blackjack if you don’t know how to. The goal of the game is simple, all you have to do is beat the dealer. In order to do so, you have to get the value of your hand to be higher than the dealer’s hand. However, if the value of your hand goes over 21, you lose. In the same way, if the dealer’s hand goes over 21, the dealer loses. If your first two cards add up to 21, you immediately win if the dealer does not have a hand value of 21 as well.

Value of Cards

There are a total of 52 cards in a deck in a game of Blackjack.

  • 2 to 10 all counts as their face value
  • J, Q, and K counts as 10
  • An Ace can either be counted as a 1 or an 11 depending on the situation

When a round starts, players will place their bets in the betting circle. Depending on the casino or table, the minimum and maximum bet will vary. The dealer will then deal two cards to each player and also to themselves with a card facing up and another facing down. If both the player and dealer does not get a Blackjack, the player can continue by doing either one of these things:

  • Hit – This is done when you think the value of your hand is not enough and you want to get more cards to improve the total value of your hand. By doing so, the dealer will deal an extra card to you, until you choose to stand or if the value of your hand exceeds 21.
  • Stand – You can stand if you feel that your initial hand is good enough and do not need additional cards, and the dealer will go to the next player.
  • Split – You can choose to split when you are dealt with two cards of the same value. Basically, what it does it you will split your cards into two different hands, and you continue playing with both hands. One hand is played at a time and in certain situations, choosing to split may double your odds of winning.
  • Surrender – If you feel that your hand has a bad chance of winning and you do not want to take the risk, you can choose to surrender and get back half of your initial bet. This is commonly done to minimize losses when in a situation where winning seems like a pipe dream.
  • Double Down – When you are dealt with a hand that seems to be in your odds but you still need to draw one more card, doubling down will mean that your initial bet is doubled and the dealer will deal you an extra card. A good example would be when you initial hand has a total value of 11 and you have a good chance at getting 21.
